Disgraced music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and crypto crook Sam Bankman-Fried are currently sharing space at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC Brooklyn), a federal lockup in Brooklyn, New York City. Combs, who is facing federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges, and Bankman-Fried, who recently received a 25-year prison sentence in the FTX cryptocurrency scandal, are both housed in a special housing unit within the facility.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has declined to provide further details regarding their incarceration, citing privacy, safety, and security reasons. However, it has been revealed that the pair are in the same bunk room, which accommodates 18 to 20 inmates requiring a higher level of security. This unit also includes government informants who would be at risk in the general population.
Combs, 54, was arrested in a New York City hotel last week and charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion, and transportation for the purpose of prosecution. Federal prosecutors successfully argued that he posed an “extreme danger to the community,” leading to his detention without bail. Combs pleaded not guilty to the charges. Initially, there were reports suggesting that he was on suicide watch, but sources have since dismissed those claims.
Bankman-Fried, 32, is currently at the Brooklyn facility pending his appeal after being found guilty of fraud in November. In March, he was sentenced to 25 years for his involvement in one of the largest fraud scandals in US history. Prosecutors alleged that Bankman-Fried and other top executives at his firm, FTX, embezzled $8 billion from customer accounts on the FTX exchange. The stolen funds were allegedly used for risky investments, illegal campaign contributions, the purchase of luxurious Caribbean properties, and even bribing Chinese officials.
Caroline Ellison, Bankman-Fried’s former lover and a top executive at FTX, testified against him and is scheduled to be sentenced this week. Prosecutors have requested leniency for her due to her cooperation.
